Sketchbook

Item Sketches

Item sketches let a book page show a sketched item model instead of a captured scene or studied entity. They are meant for catalogues, field notes, quest books, equipment records, and Scholar spreads where an item should be the subject of the page.

Quick flow
  • Carry a usable Pencil or Pencil Case.
  • Open a writable book, or a compatible Scholar book/lectern.
  • Right click an empty page and choose Items.
  • Type into the search overlay, select a non-block item, then adjust the sketch on the page.
  • Right click the finished sketch again to recolour it, toggle detail lines, delete it, or rip the page.

Item Search

The Items menu opens a small search overlay at the cursor. Start typing part of an item id or translated item name; after a short delay, Sketchbook lists matching results.

RuleBehavior
Item typeThe result must be a registered item and cannot be air.
Block itemsBlock items are filtered out of the item search.
Result countThe overlay shows up to 100 matching items.
Empty pageA new item sketch can only be placed on an empty sketch page.
Pencil checkPlacing a new item sketch requires a Pencil or Pencil Case, just like scene and entity sketches.

Detail Lines

After an item sketch is placed, right click it and open Details. Sketchbook only offers detail lines that make sense for that item.

DetailWhen it appears
NameAvailable for every sketched item.
ArmorArmor items with a positive defense value.
Armor ToughnessArmor items with toughness above zero.
Knockback ResistanceArmor items with a main armor-slot knockback resistance modifier.
DamageItems with positive main-hand attack damage.
Attack SpeedItems with positive main-hand attack speed.
DurabilityDamageable items.
FoodFood items with nutrition above zero.
SaturationFood items with saturation above zero.

Detail values are read from the item stack data that Minecraft exposes for the item. Whole and fractional values are formatted cleanly so the page stays readable.

Pencil required

Toggling item detail lines on an existing item sketch still requires a usable Pencil. This matches entity sketch details and prevents book pages from changing without the normal sketching tools.

Page Controls

Item sketches use the same edit controls as entity sketches while the book is still writable.

ControlResult
Left mouse dragMoves the item sketch across the page.
Mouse wheelScales the item sketch up or down. The saved scale is clamped between 8 and 320.
Middle mouse dragRotates the item sketch horizontally by changing its yaw.

The client previews each change immediately and syncs the final transform back to the server after a short idle delay.

Colour And Torn Pages

Item sketches count as normal sketch pages once placed.

  • The Colour submenu can recolour the generated graphite item image with available coloured pencils.
  • Delete Sketch removes the item sketch from the page.
  • Rip Page turns the page into a Torn Sketch item.
  • A page can contain only one sketch type, so an item sketch cannot share a page with a scene sketch or entity sketch.

Scholar Books

When Scholar is installed, the same item sketch flow works in supported spread books and lectern editing. Sketchbook still validates the page on the server before applying the item sketch, so the page must be writable, available, and empty before a new item sketch can be placed.

Troubleshooting

SymptomLikely cause
The Items entry is disabledYou do not have a usable Pencil, or the page cannot accept a new sketch.
Search finds nothingThe query does not match a registered non-block item name or id.
A block does not appearBlock items are intentionally filtered out of item sketch search.
Details cannot be toggledThe item has no matching detail data, or you do not have a usable Pencil.
The sketch fails after selecting an itemThe server rejected an unknown item id, a missing book, a non-empty page, or a page already occupied by another sketch type.
